Vocational Careers, Jobs & Salaries

Vocational programs prepare students for entry-level positions. Many of these skills used to be learned on the job, but an increasingly complex and competitive marketplace now favors those with prior certifications and/or training. Graduates are often in a position to command a higher pay rate and better benefits. Additionally, continuing education courses are a must for many of today's fast-paced fields, such as health care and computer technology.

There are literally hundreds of jobs and fields that can be covered by a vocational program. Some examples are offered here; interested students should discuss their career and education options with the school they are planning to attend.

Computer Technology

Vocational training is an especially good idea in computer fields, as most employers require basic skills in the specific field, perhaps certification, and demonstrated work ability. Some of these jobs are among the fastest-growing in the US and include:

Students can specialize in types of administration (health care, school, human resources, etc.) or in fields such as accounting, advertising, sales, or transportation management.

Legal Studies

Students learn how to assist lawyers and legal teams in a variety of capacities. Paralegals help lawyers research and prepare cases and arguments. Their average salary in 2002 was $37,950. Legal secretaries and their assistants run the office, file, manage clients, and assist with research. Legal secretaries earned an average salary of $35,020.

Engineering Technology

Engineering technicians assist engineers and scientists in carrying out their work - the planning, building, and repair of numerous structures and products. Engineering technicians specialize in a trade.
